What are vestibular disorders?

Vestibular Disorders occur when there is injury or disease to the vestibular system (inner ear). Patients may experience loss of balance, dizziness, nausea and/or vertigo.

What are dizziness and vertigo?

  • Dizziness is sometimes described as “light-headed,” “floating,” or feeling “off.”
  • Vertigo is the sensation of movement around you – most commonly a spinning sensation.

What causes dizziness or vertigo?

There are many different causes of dizziness and vertigo. Some of the most common vestibular (inner ear) disorders that cause vertigo and dizziness are:

  • BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Vestibular Neuritis
  • Vestibular Labyrinthitis

Your physical therapist will perform a detailed evaluation, determine the proper course of treatment, and create a customized program to help resolve your symptoms and help you reach your goals.

Importance of balance

  • Falls are the leading cause of accidental death and injury in people 65 and older.
  • 33% of older adults fall annually, but only half of them talk to their doctor about it.
  • Falling is NOT a normal part of aging.

    • Improve strength and confidence
    • Decrease fall risk
    • Improve walking safety
